Food tips

Buying an Oven : If you need to purchase a gas oven or range, look for one with an automatic, electric ignition system. An electric ignition saves gas-because a pilot light is not burning continuously.

Buy Fairtrade Food : The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.

For a product to display the FAIRTRADE Mark it must meet international Fairtrade standards. These standards are set by the international certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO).

Producer organisations that supply Fairtrade products are inspected and certified by FLO. They receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects.
  • Find out which fair trade products are available at which supermarkets
  • Get involved in fair trade campaigns.

Buy Local Food : If you were to turn back the clock 100 years, what would gardeners in your area be growing? Try regional heirloom varieties of garden standbys such as beans, squash, tomatoes and melons, which were selected for their flavors and reliability in the days when personal survival often depended upon a garden’s success. Appalachian “greasy” beans or creamy New England-bred butternut squash can help open the door to great flavors from the past.

Safety in the kitchen

Keep electrical leads from trailing over or going near the cooker.
Consider having a fire blanket in your kitchen, mounted on the wall where you can get to it instantly.

Ingredients And Procedures

1/2 C Brown Sugar

1 Env Unflavored Gelatin

1/2 Tsp Salt

2/3 C Milk

3 Eggs -- separated

1 C Pawpaw Pulp -- strained

1/4 C Sugar

In a saucepan, mix together brown sugar, gelatin, and salt. Stir in milk and slightly beaten egg yolks. Cool and stir until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from fire and stir in pawpaw pulp. Chill until it mounds slightly when spooned (20 to 30 minutes in refrigerator). Shortly before the mixture is sufficiently set, beat eggwhites until they form soft peaks; then gradually add sugar, beating until stiff peaks form. Fold the partly set sapaw mixture thoroughly into egg whites. Pour into a 9 inch graham cracker crust or into parfait glasses and chill until firm. "Then lock the doors to keep the neighbors out."
